About Shri Ambabai/Mahalaxmi Temple and the deity:
The Vedic culture encouraged religious literature and establishment of pilgrimage sites. Through the religious literature we can understand the form of Sri Mahalakshmi as it is seen today. Legend says that Gods and demons churned the ocean and certain jewels were born. Sri Mahalakshmi was one among them. As soon as she appeared she became the consort of Lord Vishnu who is the supreme Lord of the Universe. This Goddess Mahalakshmi with unparallel beauty was a female representation of Universal Wealth.
Shri Mahalakshmi Temple is located in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. Here, Sri Mahalakshmi’s Idol is made of Gem stone and is considered to be at least 5000-6000 years old and weighs about 40 Kgs. and about 2.85 ft tall.
Eight forms of Goddesses dwell within her, Dhanalakshmi (provides Wealth), Dhaanyalakshmi(provides Crops), Dhairyalakshmi (provides Courage), Shauryalakshmi (provides Valour), KIrtilakshmi(provides Fame), Vinayalakshmi (instills Modesty), Raajyalakshmi (provides Kingdom) and Santaanlakshmi (provides Children). She signifies property, happiness, radiance and fame.
In skaMda purANa, this place is referred as “Karaveera Pura”. Legend says, that Sri Mahalakshmi came and stayed here at this place because of the anger caused by Bhrugu Maharshi when he hits Bhagavan Vishnu’s chest. In this same chest, the most divine chest of Bhagavan MahaVishnu, his loving consort Sri Mahalakshmi Devi is staying and thus Bhagavan Sri Vishnu is known as Srivatsa. Here we are aware that this is Ramaa- Vishnu’s leela-kreeda for loka mohanArtha. NityAviyogini Sri Mahalakshmi always stays in the heart of Bhagavan Sri Vishnu.
Due to the prayers of Maharshi Agastya and Gautama, Bhagavan Vishnu orders Sri Mahalakshmi to kill an Asura named ‘Kolla’ and she comes here and kills the Asura and stays back in Karaveerapura.
An important Festival -Navaratri (nine nights) festival is celebrated for ten days during the Hindu month of Ashwin shuddha Pratipada to Vijaya Dashami (around October).
During Navaratri, Sri Mahalakshmi is decorated differently each day to present a new image to the devotees. The only part of Sri Mahalakshmi not covered is Her face. This year MYP is blessed to present such blissful, unique digital images of vishESha alaMkAra of Sri Mahalakshmi.
In all twelve such divine and breathtaking digital images have adored this year’s MYP Calendar to offer holy darshana of Sri Mahalakshmi in different postures with decorations bedecked with gold, diamond and silver jewels through each page month after month.
